O'Neil was a contestant on her third series of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. She was able to make it into the top tier of contestants following the judges' praise for her vocal ability. O'Neil won high praises from the jury. She was however a complete loser in both the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were shocked by the results and advised the viewers to vote for contestants like Melissa O'Neil, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil did not make it to the top 3 after an impressive string of performances. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil had defeated Goudie and was the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
